Dette er håndboken for dem som trenger informasjon om snøskred enten som friluftslivsentusiaster i snøskredterreng eller dem som møter snøskredproblemer i jobb-sammenheng. Boken viser først hvilke problemer snøskred forårsaker i Norge historisk sett. Deretter gjennomgås terrengformer der snøskred oppstår, snø i atmosfæren og på bakken. Hvordan skred blir utløst og værforhold som fører til skred er viet bred plass. Friluftsliv i forbindelse med snøskred - også søk og redning - er gitt en grundig behandling. Lover og regler er omtalt, samt kartlegging og sikring mot skred.

Norges Geotekniske Institutt (NGI) fikk etter stortingsvedtak i 1972 ansvaret snøskredforskningen i Norge. Boken er i stor grad basert på erfaringer og forskningsresultater samlet ved NGI gjennom 30 års arbeid i hele landet, og i andre land med lignende problemer.

Karstein Lied har over 30 års erfaring med snøskred. Han har vært leder for skredgruppen ved NGI i 25 år og vært sentral i oppbyggingen av kompetansen om snø og snøskred i Norge. Lied har lang erfaring fra forskning og rådgivning, spesielt innenfor problemer knyttet til rekkevidde, kartlegging og sikring mot snøskred. Lied nyter stor respekt for sin innsats for å løse praktiske problemstillinger knyttet til snøskredfaget både nasjonalt og internasjonalt.

Krister Kristensen har jobbet med snøskred siden 1975 da han ble ansatt på NGIs skredkontor i Stryn. Han har lang erfaring med vurdering av skredfare i fjellet og han har vært knyttet til NGIs forskningsstasjon på Strynefjellet. Kristensen har særlig arbeidet med utfordringene mot friluftslivet, og er sertifisert som internasjonalt godkjent tindeveileder (Nortind/IFMGA). Kristensen har vært sentralt med i utviklingen av kursvirksomhet for å heve kunnskapen om risiko for snøskred ved ferdsel i fjellet, og i utviklingen av metoder for redningstjenesten i Norges Røde Kors Hjelpekorps. Han har i mange år representert NGI i den internasjonale fjellredningskommisjonen (ICAR).
